Xcel Energy Rebates in Colorado, and What Each One Pays

Xcel Energy pays its heat pump rebate per ton of capacity, not as a flat amount, and it pays two different rates depending on how your home is heated today. That is why the same program is worth about $4,500 at one house and about $9,000 at the one next door.

Below is what Xcel currently pays on every residential measure we file for in Colorado, which tier your home falls into, and the October 1, 2026 change that lowers the largest number on this page. Everything here is current as of August 28, 2026.

Changing October 1, 2026. Xcel is cutting its gas-heat bonus from 3x the standard rebate to 2x. A cold-climate heat pump goes from $2,250 to $1,500 per heating ton. To keep the higher amount, your system has to be installed and invoiced before October 1, with the rebate application submitted by October 15.

What Xcel pays right now

Standard amounts took effect November 16, 2025. The bonus column applies to homes that heat with an Xcel gas furnace or boiler today.

The two tiers, and which one you are on

Almost every confusing thing about this program comes back to one distinction.

• The bonus tier requires active Xcel natural gas service with a gas furnace or boiler as your primary heat source. That is where the 3x, and after October 1 the 2x, multiplier comes from.

• The standard tier is what everyone else gets, including electric-only customers heating with baseboard. The rebate is real, but it is a third of the headline number you have probably seen quoted.

The logic is straightforward once you see it: Xcel is paying to retire gas load. A home that already heats with electricity has no gas load to retire, so it earns the base amount rather than the multiplier.

Why it is per ton, and why nominal tonnage will mislead you

This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in Colorado heat pump quoting, and it is worth two minutes.

Xcel does not pay on the tonnage printed on the box. It pays on the certified heating capacity your specific outdoor and indoor unit combination produces at 5F, taken from the AHRI rating in the NEEP cold-climate database. The formula Xcel applies is capacity at 5F divided by 12,000, multiplied by the rebate rate, rounded to the nearest $5.

Heat pumps lose capacity as it gets colder. A system sold as a three-ton unit routinely delivers well under 36,000 BTU at 5F. So a quote that multiplies nominal tons by the rebate rate produces a number the homeowner will not receive.

A worked example, at the post-October rate: a system certified at 30,000 BTU at 5F is 2.5 heating tons. 2.5 x $1,500 is $3,750. The same system quoted off its three-ton nameplate would have promised $4,500. That $750 gap is the homeowner's, not the contractor's, unless someone checked the rating.

Equipment that qualifies

• Cold-climate ducted or partially ducted systems must hit 15.2 SEER2, 10 EER2, 8.1 HSPF2, a COP of at least 1.75 at 5F, and 70% capacity maintenance, verified on the NEEP database.

• Standard, non-cold-climate systems must hit 15.2 SEER2, 11.7 EER2, and 7.8 HSPF2 with AHRI verification.

• Ground source systems must be listed on AHRI or energystar.gov.

• Contractor rules differ by measure. Ducted air source and ground source systems require a participating Xcel contractor. Ductless mini splits and heat pump water heaters are currently open to any contractor, though Xcel filed in April 2026 to move mini splits to participating-contractor-only. Assume that closes.

Weatherization, audits, and the Whole Home Efficiency bonus

The envelope side of the program is smaller per line but it compounds, and it changes how well the heat pump performs once it is in.

Insulation and air sealing rebates require a participating Xcel contractor and a blower door test before and after the work.

Two bonuses sit on top of these. The Whole Home Efficiency bonus adds 25% to your standard rebate amounts once you complete three or more qualifying measures within two years, after an energy audit and program enrollment. Separately, Xcel pays an additional $600 when air sealing and insulation are invoiced before the heat pump or heat pump water heater goes in. Sequencing the work in that order is worth real money, and it is the order that produces a better-performing system anyway.

What Xcel no longer pays

Xcel's high-efficiency gas furnace and boiler rebates, which paid $225 to $325, applied to 2025 installations only. Invoices dated in 2025 could still be submitted through September 30, 2026. There is no current Colorado residential rebate from Xcel for a new gas furnace, which is a meaningful part of the math if you are weighing a like-for-like furnace replacement against a heat pump.

Who qualifies

• Property type: single-family homes, duplexes, and fourplexes.

• Account: active Xcel service at the home. Gas or gas-and-electric accounts reach the bonus tier; electric-only accounts get standard amounts.

• Invoice dates: 2025 or 2026.

• Filing: for most measures your contractor submits the application, and you cannot file it yourself.

What stacks on top of Xcel

Xcel is usually the largest single layer, but it is not the only one. Colorado's state heat pump incentive pays $1,000 for an air source system, $2,000 for ground source, and $250 for a heat pump water heater in 2026, delivered as a discount on your invoice by a state-registered contractor rather than as something you claim. In the Denver region, Power Ahead Colorado adds $1,500 flat with no income limit. The federal HEAR program, which used to pay up to $8,000 for income-qualified households, is closed in Colorado.

Xcel programs that only exist in certain places

Xcel also runs targeted programs in specific neighborhoods and towns, where a gas pipeline replacement would otherwise be needed. Where these apply they replace the statewide amounts above, and they pay substantially more.

• Mountain Energy Project, for eight mountain towns including Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon, Silverthorne, and Leadville. It is the only Xcel program in Colorado with an air-to-water heat pump line.

• Aurora F-3 Project, for a defined area of west Aurora, which pays 100% of project cost up to a cap per measure.

• Xcel Neighborhood Retrofit in Valverde, the income-qualified Denver pilot that Zero Homes operates end to end.
