Heat Pump Water Heaters

Heat Pump Water Heater Installation.

A heat pump water heater replaces your gas, propane, or electric tank water heater with a high-efficiency hybrid unit that uses roughly half the energy. A heat pump hot water heater is the fastest electrification win most homes can make. Same hot water, same fittings, same tank size you're used to, just a heat pump on top instead of a burner or a heating element.

The Basics

What Is a Heat Pump Water Heater?

A heat pump water heater (HPWH) looks like a regular tank water heater with a small heat pump unit on top. Instead of burning gas or running an electric heating element, it moves heat from the surrounding air into the water, the same principle as a heat-pump HVAC system, just doing a different job.

Most HPWHs are hybrid: they run in heat-pump mode when ambient temperature is mild, and switch to electric resistance backup when the install space is unusually cold or hot water demand spikes.

Same hot water output as your old tank. Lower energy bills. No gas combustion in the house.

Find Your Fit

Is a Heat Pump Water Heater Right for Your Home?

HPWHs are the right call for most homes, but they need a few things: enough ambient air around the install location, and a household that doesn't run hot water in commercial quantities.

Best For

If any of these sound like your home, a heat pump water heater is the right path.

  • Replacing an aging gas, propane, or electric resistance tank water heater
  • Basements, garages, or utility rooms with 700+ cubic feet of air space
  • Households of 2 to 6 people with typical hot-water usage
  • Replacing hot water systems 10+ years old and approaching end of life
  • Homes prioritizing reduced operating costs over upfront cost

Not the Right Fit

If a HPWH isn't a fit, your Home Advisor will help you find the right path.

  • Very small or fully-enclosed unheated spaces (a HPWH needs ambient air to draw heat from)
  • Households with extreme hot-water demand (7+ people or commercial-style use)
  • Living-space installs where sound is a concern
