The Details

Understand How You Qualify

The Mountain Energy Project is an Xcel program. Here are the three things to determine how you may qualify for the rebate.

1. An active Xcel residential gas account. Gas only, or gas and electric together. Homes already heating with electric don’t qualify.

2. A working furnace, less than 10 years old. Up to $7,500 goes towards a new cold-climate heat pump to replace your aging furnace*.

3. An address in one of eight ZIP codes:

  • 80424 Breckenridge

  • 80435 Dillon

  • 80443 Frisco

  • 80447 Grand Lake

  • 80461 Leadville

  • 80497 and 80498 Silverthorne

  • 81649 Red Cliff

If your furnace is older than 10 years and/or already failed, you may still qualify for up to a $4,000 rebate.

The Truth About

Cold-Climate Heat Pumps

Contrary to the heat pumps of the past, cold-climate heat pumps are designed to operate in cold climates like Colorado. The units we install keep heating efficiently in temps as low as -13°F.

  • Real heat in a Colorado winter. At 5°F, a cold-climate unit is still putting out at least 70% of its full heating power. Most homes don’t need backup heat; if yours does, your design will say so.

  • Even temperatures, room by room. Sized with a certified load calculation for your rooms, not a one-size swap. That’s the difference between being “comfortable in every room”, versus avoiding the cold spaces.

  • Replaced on your timeline. Don't get stuck without heat on a cold winter night because your furnace 'conveniently' decided to break. Plan your upgrade around your schedule.

*Rebate amounts are Xcel Energy's published Mountain Energy Project figures for 2025–26 and are subject to change. Eligibility requires active Xcel Energy residential natural gas service at an address in ZIP 80424, 80435, 80443, 80447, 80461, 80497, 80498 or 81649. The $7,500 per heating ton early-replacement amount requires the replaced equipment to be under ten years old and operational at removal, certified by both customer and installing contractor. Xcel may inspect; projects failing early-replacement requirements are re-rated to $4,000 per heating ton and the difference is repayable. Total rebates from all sources cannot exceed actual equipment and labour costs. Cold-climate heat pumps must achieve COP ≥1.75 at 5°F with heating capacity at 5°F of at least 70% of the 47°F rating; ducted systems must be installed by an Xcel Energy Trade Network contractor. Full removal of the existing natural gas equipment serving that space is required. Funding is limited and first-come, first-served, and the program may end at any time. Zero Homes does not administer the Mountain Energy Project — Xcel Energy determines eligibility and pays rebates. Zero Homes does not guarantee energy cost savings.
